There are two views of books like this one. The CD-ROM is all you
need because you can use it together with your WWW browser to connect to the
sites concerned. The other view is that the paper copy allows you to browse
through the potential sites that might be worth a visit. I am old enough to
find the second view more attractive than the first.
The book is certainly a mine of interesting sites. The biggest problem I
have is that as I flick through the pages I continually find myself thinking
'Hm... that's interesting. I wonder when I will have time to look it out.'
For example, just a few minutes ago I was browsing Chapter 5 (Useful
Libraries) when my alighted on CLIPS51. Now I know what CLIPS is but I had
no idea that it had reached version 5.1.
However finding it again was a little more difficult because it is not
listed under C but under a heading 'Expert Systems' which you will find under
AI. Of course it would have been easy to use the CD for that second search,
but without the book I would not have noticed it in the first place.
I think this one is worth the cost. I certainly think it is worth your
giving it a look.
