I recently reviewed the first edition of this book. John Levine has
joined the original authors for this new edition and I suspect that much of
the extra material (nearly 50% more for the same price) is his
responsibility. The book now covers all main versions of the tools on both
UNIX and DOS platforms. Many of the old examples have been enhanced or
replaced with stronger ones. There is new and interesting chapter about
Parsing SQL (Structured Query Language).
I could go on at length but I will mention once again my belief that serious
C programmers ought to take the time to learn about the range of tools that
were assumed in the K & R days. Far too many spend valuable time re-inventing
wheels. A considerable number of useful applications fit nicely
into the domain of problems well tackled with lex and yacc.
Make it a New Year resolution to get your hands on versions suitable for
your platform, there are plenty around, both good PD and commercial ones;
buy this book and settle down to discovering what these tools are about. To
program in C without them is like being a carpenter who cannot be bothered to
include a tenon saw in his tool bag.
